Current Design Trends

I had the opportunity to attend the HUGE annual Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Chicago in May of this year. This is an event where companies in this industry unveil their prototypes for new products, show-off their new design ideas, and divulge their plans to make a difference in the upcoming year. Here are some of the things I learned at KBIS:

First and foremost, our industry is finally going GREEN! Green building is really catching on with kitchen cabinet companies across the nation. Bardon is heading in that direction as well. In addition to becoming a greener company, we have a new line of eco-friendly cabinetry coming up that will allow our environmentally conscious customers to design a fantastic new kitchen and still stay as “green” as possible! Our “GreenER” display should be ready for you to check-out in early September.

Another trend I noticed at the show was quartersawn wood in gray-toned finishes. Keep your eye out for that one! I also noticed a lot of Asian-themed designs and fun decorative glass. I’ve been researching that on my own a little more, so I’ll post more any more information I discover on that topic.

Some of the newest technology in options and accessories on the market this year was showcased as well. There were blind-corner optimizers that are better than ever, lift-up cabinet door systems with finger-safe features so your fingers won’t suffer the consequences of getting too close. And, finally, my favorite: SERVO-DRIVE! This product is Blum’s new opening feature that opens drawers automatically! Just touch the drawer or gently tug the handle and it pushes the drawer out a couple inches for you. The catch on this feature is that it requires electricity. Some customers may think that they can have all this sleek euro-style cabinetry with no handles, pulls, or routing along the edges, but if the power ever goes out they have no way to open their doors and drawers! (In this case I would suggest at least putting a beveled edge on the bottom of the drawer fronts or the top edge of the doors.) It’s only 110v so it’s pretty low voltage wiring and one power supply can open 6 drawers simultaneously. Bardon will be getting some samples of this new product direct from Blum to install in some of our showroom displays in the fall, so check in with us soon!

“Inspiration for my designs comes from spending a little quality time with each customer and discussing their likes and dislikes. There are a series of specific questions I like to ask, and once a homeowner educates me on their lifestyle it is quite a treat for me to take their ideas, expand on them, and bring them to life! I feel it is an honor when someone requests my expertise and I am able to transform their house into an inviting, beautiful home!”
